The Superfruit You Should Eat Daily

They don’t come from exotic lands, remote mountaintops or lush rainforests. Yet these small, delicious berries are packed with a special type of antioxidants that make blueberries a superfruit.

The title of “superfruit” is reserved for those fruits with exceptional nutritional benefits, such as those rich in a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, or a fruit that serves as an abundant source of an otherwise hard-to-find nutrient.

In addition to being rich in complete vitamin complexes, like vitamins C, A, and K, blueberries are full of a special antioxidant called anthocyanins. This nutrient is what gives blueberries (and all berries) their distinctive color and potent health benefits.

A 2004 report published in the Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology stated, “Because of their diverse physiological activities, the consumption of anthocyanins may play a significant role in preventing lifestyle-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular and neurological diseases.” While a long-term study of 16,000 people found that greater intake of blueberries and strawberries was associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline—by as much as 2.5 years!
